This town has the distinction of being the only Henniker on the planet, but it began as a community simply named Number 6. It was one of several settlements that popped up between the Merrimack and Connecticut rivers. Many of the settlers came from Marlborough, MA, so they named this settlement New Marlborough. In 1752, it was renamed Todd's-town after Andrew Todd, who had been granted the land. In 1768, Gov. John Wentworth incorporated the town as Henniker, named in honor of Sir John Henniker, a British businessman and Parliament member.
